The Golden Rose
This could be the wildest “hat” I made to date. I wanted to make my own fascinator type Derby wear so I decided to bust out my favorite crafting tool, the Silhouette Cameo. I definitely wanted to go over the top with this one to continue my winning streak, so I rifled through my existing crafting supplies to see what I could use. Full disclosure: we found out a month ago that we had to move as they sold our rental from out from under us. We weren’t planning on moving, so we were packing in a panic. That said, I didn’t want to buy anything else that I would have to pack and move and I didn’t have too much spare time to spend on the hat.
I found a pattern online for cutting a realistic looking rose and found an excess of gold cardstock in my arsenal. I have a black (of course) dress with tiny metallic gold dots, so an idea was born. Since my goal was major impact with little effort, I enlarged the pattern to be approximately one petal per piece of paper and starting cutting away while continuing to pack. I grossly underestimated how huge the flower would end up being, but I pressed on. After the pieces were cut, I rolled the edges around a pencil to get the curve of the petal. I used a glue gun to do most of the construction of the rose. I had picked up a wide headband to use as the headpiece. Of course, it wasn’t big enough to support this gigantic flower. Hmm… So I was able to find another thick headband and I tethered them together to create enough surface area to secure the rose.
During my packing, I found remnants of black tulle from who knows what… Anyway, I was able to gather it into a round shape to frame the flower. I trimmed it and attached it to the headband(s). Then I found the gold twisty stick things (no idea what they are called, but they were used in a centerpiece for some dinner party years ago…) So I stuck those in to add to the drama, clearly with no regard for the safety of anyone else’s eyeballs.
Anyway, this hat was basically made from things I found around the house and yet I still managed to place! I only have the one picture as I was too busy with the move to do anything more.
We ended up moving a month later to a house about a mile away. How are you supposed to pack these hats for a move? Well, when you have a convertible… it’s a no brainer.
